DCG Overview
DCG is the leaving cert follow on subject from Junior Certificate Technical Graphics.
It is assessed in the following two areas.
1. Student Assignment/Project- 40%
2. Terminal Exam-60%
Problem solving and creative thinking skills are developed through the analysis and solution of both 2- and 3-dimensional graphics. Graphics and design are communicated using freehand sketching skills,traditional draughting equipment and CAD.

DCG Assignment
Every September a project/Brief is given to schools.(Different one for each level). The types of projects varies from year to year but have included;
- Sat Navs
- Computer mouse
- Quadcopter
- Water Bottle
- Perfume Bottle
- Taps
- Games controllers etc
DCG Syllabus
Solidworks (CAD)
During Transition year we take you from a novice to a capable user of the Solidworks software. Solidworks is a computer aided drawing system that allows the user to design and model in both 2-D & 3-D. the program contains many elements and functions. These are broken down into simple manageable steps that allow each individual to progress at different speeds.
Tutorials are available in PDF and video format. the program is also available to use at home on your own PC/laptop.

3-D printing
3-D printing forms a big part of design in TY. various objects/projects are modeled in 3-D using Solidworks and then printed as a prototype using the Ultimaker 3-D printer. Students will get hands on experience at Designing, Modeling and printing various projects during Transition Year. Below is a sample of student work.
Career Choices
DCG is a core element of many third level options including: Engineering, Construction and Architecture. Knowledge of this subject will greatly enhance a student's ability in any third level engineering-based programme.

- Students who have taken Tech Graphics to Junior Cert level.
- Students who have a keen interest in further studies in practical areas of engineering and construction, or in apprenticeships which include the study of technical drawings.
